The Lake Terrace Garden Club* was organized in October, 1955, Federated in 1956 with Louisiana Garden Club Federation**. By being a federated club we are also members of: ***National Garden Clubs, Inc. Deep South Region; District One of **LGCF: The ****Federated Council of New Orleans Garden Clubs and *****Civic Beautification Association. *LTGC still boasts that four of the original members are current members, they are: Gloria D'Antoni, Althea Joubert, Marilyn Keller and Mary Maher. There are other residents of Lake Terrace who were original to the club and, of course, several others have met their demise.

LTGC Objectives are: A.) To promote greater interest in the gardens of Lake Terrace; B.) To further the horticultural knowledge of our members; and C.) To bring joy and happiness with our flowers whenever possible. The objectives have remained the same from the beginning as well as the club flower: Rain Tree Blossom and club colors: Gold - Pink - Green.

Over the years club members have participated in local and state federated flower shows, bringing home to Lake Terrace many 'BLUES', TRI-COLORS and BEST OF SHOW. The club remains both viable and visual. We are proud to note that many have served on the LGCF board and presently we have two members serving as: District One Director and Prayer Request Chairman. Members have, from the beginning, been an integral part of Celebration in the Oaks and the Special Children's Program; Botanical Garden Arbor Day Program, Scarecrow Trail. Last year LTGC played a great part in restoring and the dedication of The Native Plant Garden, a Natural Disaster Project sponsored by ***National Garden Clubs, Inc. and, members participated in **LGCF "Freedom Isn't Free" Blue Star Marker at The New Orleans WW II Museum on June 6, 2010.

For many years members went twice monthly to Milne Home for Girls, the club's Philanthropic Program. Many LTGC Arbor Day programs included planting trees at area schools and hospitals as well as UNO Campus. Club members are proud to tell you that most of the trees on our neutral grounds were planted by LTGC in honor of Past Presidents and in memory of deceased members or their spouse. Members landscaped and maintained the three subdivisions signs for many years, led by members who were Accredited Landscape Judges. Members have been actively judging **LGCF Children's Litter, Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl poster contests: active, as well with the Habitat for Humanity Landscape Programs. Last garden club year members participated in decorating The NOMA Great Hall Urns and will again this club year. Another special event for members will be participating in the 25th Anniversary of Christmas / Celebration in the Oaks. Together with ****FCNOGC and *****CBA, some members will participate in the Arbor Day, St. Bernard Parish as part of their Reforestation Program.

LTGC will concentrate on the installation of A Bird Sanctuary at the main entrance to our neighborhood. Before Katrina, two members went before The New Orleans City Council and Mayor Nagin to respectfully petition for a formal Bird Sanctuary in Lake Terrace. All criteria were met and The Bird Sanctuary Proclamation was granted in accordance with the City Ordinance pertaining to Birds. An article appeared in The Times Picayune regarding the event, however, the Bird Sanctuary has not been established. It is a goal of our members to complete this project in the 2011 - 2012 garden club year. A Rose Garden was also proposed and rose bushes donated in honor of the club's 50th Anniversary, but Katrina put a hold on that project also. The club members have hopes that the rose garden will also become reality in the not too distant future.

Residents who are interested in children gardening and wish to be instrumental in starting a Youth Garden Club, please call Nancy Click, District One Director, at 333-6008.
